What is CompactPCI?
CompactPCI (CPCI) was first introduced in the 90’s to define systems suitable for industrial use based on the bus and architecture of desktop computers. CPCI has a maximum of 8 slots in 3U or 6U, with boards that are 4HP wide and 160mm deep. It uses the widely adopted PCI bus with a 32- or 64-bit bus width. The bus can be extended to 21 slots by using PCI to PCI bridges. Over the years, many dot-specifications have been implemented in the standard to add further buses. These include the Packet Switching Backplane (PSB) and H.110 (computer telephony) for telecommunications as well as PXI for instrumentation purposes. The newest specification is CPCI Serial, which uses the same mechanics but implements the current and future protocols PCIe or Serial Rapid I/O, Ethernet, USB and S-ATA / SAS. While PCIe, USB and S-ATA are radially connected from up to 8 peripheral slots to the system slot, Ethernet can be routed either radially or in a full-mesh topology. Instead of the Ethernet connections between the slots, the pins can also be used to connect signals from the front to the RTM board. CompactPCI PlusIO is the connection between CPCI and CPCI Serial. It defines a certain pinout on the P2 connector of a CompactPCI 32-bit system slot that can address up to 4 CompactPCI Serial slots. This enables the development of a hybrid system that combines the legacy CPCI technology with the future proof CPCI Serial.
